Heathens of different traditions know Fro as Frey, Freyr, or Ingvi Frey.
If you do some quick research about Frey, a lot of what you will find associates him strongly with fertility, which is correct but doesn’t quite paint the full picture.
(If you’re looking for a well-researched deep dive into Frey’s other aspects, I recommend Ann Gróa Sheffield’s book: Frey, God of the World.)
Fro reached out to me during my very first gathering with Distelfink Sippschaft during the Distribution of the Runes in which I received Engel, the rune most commonly associated with Fro. This is the rune of seeds, hope, and potential.
My pull toward Fro strengthened after my first Frofescht celebration. Frofescht, unlike many of the other Urglaawe observances, is observed at home, in private or small gatherings. It’s one of the few observances in which we do not gather with the entire kindred. The smaller, more intimate gathering allowed us all to sit and eat at one table, sharing one meal of pork, kraut, and potatoes. The conversation was more gentle and focused unlike the organized chaos and chatter during our larger gatherings.
I felt Fro’s presence at that table. I heard him laugh at our jokes and felt his silent acknowledgements of our laments and ailments. I felt his righteous rage, alongside our own as we discussed the current political and socioeconomic plagues in our society.
The warm, comforting presence resonated deeply within me. It truly felt like the seed of potential was planted into my brain.
“Time to grow.”
The gods are more than the associations we assign them in our attempt to categorize and understand the world around us.
To me, Fro is the guiding voice that I listen for when I feel stagnant or if I don’t know which direction to go. He is the “authority” figure in my psyche that tells me it’s time to stop obsessing over the day-job and save my energy for the things that truly matter to me.
Simply put, Fro is a good friend and if I had not found Urglaawe, I’m not sure if I would have connected with Frey in the same way I did with Fro.
I’ve been in hibernation from blogging/writing and I feel like that’s caused me to mentally go a little stagnant. So, I’ve created this blog as a place to get me back into the practice of writing. This is where I’m growing.
And so, this blog is dedicated to Fro.
Let’s grow together.
Mach’s immer besser!
